Moral progress is a cycle, technological progress is an arrow

Moral progress is far from guaranteed. Great moral achievements that were revolutionary are often dropped in subsequent generations. There is only weak correlation between moral progress and technological progress. In practice, moral ideas fall in and out of fashion. It is a relatively high pace layer. Rhymes with Fathers-and-sons cycles.

In contrast, technological progress is fairly linear because it builds on top of previous discoveries in a way that is additive. And the harder the science, the more this is the case.
